Abstract
The article covers organizational and content characteristics of differentiation as a form of the realization of the educational principle of individualization in the educational policy of the People's Commissariat for Education in the Ukrainian SSR in the second half of the 20 th Century in the context of socio-political, socio-economic, and pedagogical realities . The criteria of the external differentiation of education in the public schools are defined (national, territorial and economic, vocational, social, developmental, psycho-physiological, and physical health profile of students ). Active methods of teaching, used as a means of internal differentiation, are discussed as well.
